command line or via <code>--stdin</code>), it can be either a

single pattern, or a pair of such pattern separated by a colon

single pattern <em><name></em> is just a shorthand for <em><name>:<name></em>.</p>

rules used by <em>git rev-parse</em> to resolve a symbolic ref
