Use this function to determine the antibiotic code of one or more antibiotics. The data set <ahref='antibiotics.html'>antibiotics will be searched for abbreviations, official names and synonyms (brand names).

logical to indicate whether a note should be printed to the console that probably more than one antibiotic code or name can be retrieved from a single input value.

A <ahref='https://rdrr.io/r/base/character.html'>character<ahref='https://rdrr.io/r/base/vector.html'>vector with additional class
ab

All entries in the <ahref='antibiotics.html'>antibiotics data set have three different identifiers: a human readable EARS-Net code (column
ab
, used by ECDC and WHONET), an ATC code (column
atc
, used by WHO), and a CID code (column
cid
, Compound ID, used by PubChem). The data set contains more than 5,000 official brand names from many different countries, as found in PubChem.

Wrong spelling of drug names (such as "tobramicin" or "gentamycin"), which corrects for most audible similarities such as f/ph, x/ks, c/z/s, t/th, etc.

Use the
<ahref='ab_property.html'>ab_*
functions to get properties based on the returned antibiotic ID, see Examples.

Note: the
as.ab()
and
<ahref='ab_property.html'>ab_*
functions may use very long regular expression to match brand names of antimicrobial agents. This may fail on some systems.

The <ahref='lifecycle.html'>lifecycle of this function is stable. In a stable function, major changes are unlikely. This means that the unlying code will generally evolve by adding new arguments; removing arguments or changing the meaning of existing arguments will be avoided.

If the unlying code needs breaking changes, they will occur gradually. For example, a argument will be deprecated and first continue to work, but will emit an message informing you of the change. Next, typically after at least one newly released version on CRAN, the message will be transformed to an error.

This package contains all ~550 antibiotic, antimycotic and antiviral drugs and their Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) codes, ATC groups and Defined Daily Dose (DDD) from the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Drug Statistics Methodology (WHOCC, <ahref='https://www.whocc.no'>https://www.whocc.no) and the Pharmaceuticals Community Register of the European Commission (<ahref='http://ec.europa.eu/health/documents/community-register/html/atc.htm'>http://ec.europa.eu/health/documents/community-register/html/atc.htm).

These have become the gold standard for international drug utilisation monitoring and research.
